SK Foods: Pioneering Industry 4.0 with UberData Networks and Tellabs LAN Technology

The Challenge: Embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution

SK Food Group, echoing the steps of numerous manufacturers, distribution facilities, and smart warehouses across the US, sought to harness the power of Industry 4.0. This revolution, characterized by the integration of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Machine-to-Machine (M2M) learning, and smart devices, posed significant challenges in network connectivity and security. By the end of 2027, an estimated 30 billion machines are projected to be internet-connected, emphasizing the need for a robust IT solution.

The UberData Solution: Tailored Tellabs® Optical LAN Implementation

Seamless Connectivity and Cost Efficiency

SK Food Group's Director of IT, Melissa Stone, recognized the necessity for innovative networking solutions. Partnering with UberData Networks, they implemented the Tellabs® Passive LAN Technology at their Phoenix facility. This solution, compared to traditional networks, offers centralized management, greater uptime, and scalability, leading to both reduced initial and operational costs.

We gained a 41% lower equipment savings at our 220,000 sf Phoenix facility with an LAN Technology design compared to a traditional copper based network design, said Melissa Stone, SK Food Group IT Director. At that same Phoenix property, we identified a 53% savings for LAN Technology that can be attributed to lower infrastructure costs.

Operational Efficiencies and FutureProofing

LAN Technology's centralized intelligence and management drastically reduce operational and maintenance costs. Its inherent Software Defined Networking (SDN) roots promote consistent, errorfree provisioning. Moreover, its scalability ensures that SK Food Group's growth, from 4 million to 20 million units per week, is supported without exorbitant costs.

As a result of deploying Passive LAN Technology technology at our facilities, we’ve gained an approximate 70% operational savings due to reduction in IT engineering, centralized management, and the ability to perform faster MACs, stated Stone. We have also calculated a 52% savings in annual support costs.

Capitalizing on Existing Infrastructure

Tellabs® LAN Technology's flexibility allowed SK Food Group to utilize existing multimode cabling, saving $10,000 during their Tupelo, MS facility renovation. This unique capability of supporting both singlemode and multimode fiber ensures costeffective network renovations.
